Hills resident Bong Ho Yoo celebrated his 100th birthday with cake, warm wishes, and the company of members of his beloved Korean social group at Balcombe Heights Estate recently.
Having lived for a century, Bong Ho's life story is quite remarkable.
Born in 1925, Bong Ho has lived a life marked by resilience and determination. At 27, he fled North Korea during the Korean War, leaving everything behind, including his family—a loss that still weighs heavily on him.
Three years later, Bong Ho found love and married his wife. In 1973, they moved to Darwin, where he worked as a welder on the Darwin Airport extension. A year later, they relocated to Sydney, where he continued his trade until retiring in 1993.
Reflecting on his century of life, Bong Ho credits golf, contentment, and his move to a prosperous country as his keys to longevity.
"Moving from the poorest to the richest country are what helped me live such a long life," Bong Ho said.
Bong Ho and his late wife raised four children—two sons and two daughters—and now have a growing legacy that includes four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Until he was 99, Bong Ho was an avid golfer.
"After I hurt my shoulder, I could no longer play golf with my friends, so I decided to join the Korean Social Group," he said.
The group, run by Hills Community Care, has become a source of joy and connection for Bong Ho. Through weekly activities, including social outings, light exercise, and cultural events, he's found a supportive community.
"It's very comforting to meet new friends who speak the same language as you and everyone here is very lovely," Bong Ho said.
